For more than half a century coconut oil, butter and other carriers of saturated fats have been demonized as unhealthy and heart-damaging. This is a misconception which many researchers has been already shown that it is a myth.

What is coconut oil?

Coconut oil is obtained from the dried flesh of the coconut.

For the indigenous people of tropical regions, it has been an integral part of their diet for thousands of years.

It can also be used in Indian Ayurveda – not only as a food, but also in the treatment of skin diseases.

As early as the 1980s, scientists discovered that people who traditionally ate a lot of coconut oil with their food were much less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease.

In contrast, indigenous people who replaced coconut oil with other – supposedly healthier – vegetable fats such as sunflower and soybean oil seem to have more diabetes and heart disease.  [1]

Nutritional Values of Coconut Oil

About 90% of coconut oil consists of saturated fats, of which the largest proportion (65%) consists of so-called MCT fats.

MCT stands for medium chain triglycerides.

Many of the positive effects of coconut oil on your health are attributed to MCT fatty acids.

In fact, few people know how healthy the right coconut oil really is.

But coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil. If you use the wrong product, you harm your health more than you help it.

First, the answer to the crucial question.

Some cardiologists get a heart attack when they see how more and more people enjoy coconut oil.

In fact, many people still condemn coconut oil for its high content of saturated fats.

“Saturated fats are bad for the heart?” This myth cannot be killed. Fortunately, we know better.

In the meantime, there are more and more studies that prove that coconut oil is healthy for you.

The MCT fatty acids, which occur in the form of lauric acid in coconut oil, are particularly decisive.

Is coconut oil healthy?

Here are some arguments in favour:

  • Coconut oil increases your mental performance. 
  • Coconut oil lowers cholesterol levels and supports a healthy cardiovascular system.
  • Coconut oil is a very good source of energy in an anabolic or ketogenic diet. It promotes the formation of ketone bodies better than other fats.
  • Coconut oil can slow down muscle breakdown despite a major calorie deficiency.
  • The MCT fatty acids contained in coconut oil are an effective remedy against Alzheimer’s.

Studies have shown that vegetable oil has an effect on skin and hair that is just as good or even better than the mineral oil commonly used in cosmetics:

  • Coconut oil is effective against dry skin.

The secret seems no doubt to lie in the MCT fatty acids mentioned earlier.

Your liver converts them into a highly efficient source of energy – and this helps you to break down body fat.

That means now: The more coconut oil, the slimmer?

I could now tell you the story of a friend of mine who has tried it. He “refined” his coffee with a lot of coconut oil. Several times a day.

He didn’t lose weight, he gained weight.

Overlooked the small print: Coconut oil only helps you lose weight if you use it to replace other – preferably less healthy – fats!

There is another pitfall that you should absolutely know.

Buy the right coconut oil: Mispurchases are bad for your health!
Coconut oil can only display its strengths if you buy the right product.

Certain manufacturing processes reverse the positive effect – and make coconut oil unhealthy.

Buying coconut oil #1: Avoid these products

Buying Coconut Oil: If the product is labeled as follows, you should leave it at the supermarket:

The coconut oil or coconut fat has been refined, bleached or otherwise processed. Often, the manufacturer will make this clear in his product description. Example: “This is a pure coconut fat, but is characterized by its taste-neutral properties”.

If you don’t find the name cold-pressed, native or extra native on the package – hands off!

In these cases, the coconut oil was probably heavily processed and heated mechanically.

Often chemicals are used to extract the oil from the coconut.

If so the healthy ingredients are either chemically modified or completely filtered out. This can also change the composition of the fatty acids.

Sometimes the manufacturers also add additives that are supposed to preserve the oil.

There is a high risk that you will buy a pig in a poke and perhaps even harm rather than benefit your health.

Buying coconut oil #2: With this coconut oil you can access

If you want to buy healthy coconut oil, pay attention to one of these labels:

  • cold-pressed,
  • native (extra),
  • (extra) virgin or
  • extra vierge

Then the coconut oil was pressed particularly gently and carefully at low temperatures (“cold-pressed”).

The ingredients and fatty acids are retained.

I use this coconut oil almost daily. With a 31 oz glass, I still get by more than a month.

If you want to use coconut oil because of its positive effects on slimming and your health quite specifically, you should consider these recommendations:

How much?

Studies have shown that extra virgin coconut oil can be effective if you consume about 8-15 grams a day.

Too much energy? You should replace other (unhealthier) fats with coconut oil. Since coconut oil is very rich in energy, you can easily slow down your consumption if you take the coconut oil additionally.

How much heating? Coconut oil is one of the best oils for hot cooking, frying and stewing. It retains its healthy properties even at high temperatures (smoke point only at 177 °C) – in contrast to less heat-resistant oils such as linseed oil (smoke point at 107 °C).

Which product? Make sure that the coconut oil is marked as cold-pressed, native or virgin, like this one.

Conclusion

Fat makes fat? This myth has been disproved by many.

It is slowly getting around: The right fats should definitely be an integral part of your diet.

Coconut oil is one of these real fats. Also, or precisely because it contains a high proportion of saturated fatty acids. These include the magical MCT fats, which are probably the main reason for the healthy and slimming properties of coconut oil.

When shopping, take a close look and make sure you buy a cold-pressed coconut oil from the organic shop.

Is coconut oil healthy? Yes, it is. Does coconut oil help lose weight? Yes, it can. One point is still missing: coconut oil smells and tastes incredibly good.
